The normal entry-level position in the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is Sanitation Worker. Sanitation Workers are appointed from a civil-service list. In order to be placed on the civil-service list, a candidate must pass a written exam and a physical test administered by
The Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS). As DSNY receives authorization to hire Sanitation Workers, it calls candidates in list-number order. Each candidate must pass a pre-employment medical exam, a background check and a driver's license check.
Under the current civil service list, each candidate must have a high school diploma, or equivalent, and a commercial driver's license at the time of appointment. Sanitation Workers must reside within New York City, Nassau County or Westchester County.
The current starting salary of a Sanitation Worker is $31,200 per year. The current labor agreement provides for periodic increases to a maximum of $67,141 after 5 1/2 years. In addition to the basic annual wages, Sanitation Workers may also earn differential payments based on their specific assignment and overtime.
The current Sanitation Worker list from civil service exam # 6063 was established on Feb. 20, 2008 and will expire on Feb.19, 2012. Any candidate who passed the written exam # 6063 and has list # below 6,856 but was not scheduled for the physical test should visit the DCAS website for further instructions. If you passed your physical test and your list # is 840 and below, letters for Pre - Orientation were mailed during April, 2008.
