Belize Sample Anthology Of Poetry

What is it like to be Unfettered?

Let the poems of Kalilah Enriquez demonstrate…

The Image Factory on North Front Street, Belize City, will overflow with poetic energy and excitement on Friday night, December 1, when Kalilah Enriquez, Belizean poet/talk show host/journalist, takes center stage to unveil her debut anthology dubbed Unfettered.

“I call it Unfettered, meaning free, liberated, unrestrained. Fetters were literally the chains that slave-masters used around the ankles and wrists of slaves, so the word ‘unfettered’ goes a step further than simple freedom; it is freedom from, like Bob Marley says, ‘mental slavery,’ and in this modern post-feminist age, it is also women’s liberation,” Enriquez explained at a press conference held at the Image Factory this morning.

Kalilah is popularly known as KREM’s news editor and co-host of the KREM WUB Morning Vibes, but today, she introduced a whole new dimension of herself to the public – poet, visual artist, publisher, and recording artist.

She uses all the powerful tools of poetry to present thoughts, feelings and ideas about both everyday and extraordinary experiences.

“The poetic renaissance of 2005 brought a whirlwind of poetic activity in Belize’s metropolis. A number of poets, not previously known for their craft, surfaced at the Putt Putt Bar and Grill’s Lyrical Lounge. It was this nurturing forum that brought the lady, Kalilah Enriquez, into the nocturnal limelight,” said Adele Ramos-Daly, president of the Belizean Poets Society and Assistant Editor of Amandala, when she introduced Enriquez to the press this morning.

“By day, she was talk show host and journalist, but on show nights she took a new persona on stage, where she skillfully vocalized her emotions about everything from rape, as in her piece, Force Ripe, to criminal injustices, as in her highly acclaimed and controversial composition, Execution Style,” Ramos-Daly added.

Under the imprint of the flaming pen, she publishes 35 poems, and in the back of the book is tucked a 16-track audio CD, produced by Ludwig Studios, which includes some of her more potent pieces.

KREM TV producer, Mose Hyde, who also appears on the CD, did the cover design, which includes a pastel self-portrait of the poet.

“For a black conscious male, there is nothing so exciting as a black woman who is confident of her beauty.  In the very first poem of Unfettered, entitled Roots, the lady declares her natural and her real. I am black and I am beautiful. Songs of Solomon… in cornrows,/liberated,/no longer suppressed by a perm;/no longer told to relax/no longer forced to lye to myself,” writers Evan X Hyde in the foreword to the book.

Enriquez said that the poems in her collection were written over the last five years, but the production took her a year to complete.

In the 1st Annual Belizean Poets Contest held last September (2005), Enriquez, the second place winner, also won an opportunity from Ludwig Studios to record an album.

Unfettered—the CD—features top Belizean artists like Frankie Rhys, Tanya Carter, River of Fire, Dan Man, and Shibabei (formerly of the Uguru Band).

This week, Enriquez presented “The Creative Process: Form and Flow in Poetry” at the University of Belize’s central campus in Belmopan, as well as to the Literary Club at her alma mater, Saint John’s College Junior College.

She goes on tour with her book over the next few weeks.

Unfettered is a self-published work, with sponsorship from KREM Radio, KREM Television, Amandala, HD Construction, Belize Paradise Ltd., Buck’s Best Buy, and Gibraltar Global Securities.
